Online Registration Reminder
Online registration for the 2021 Convention is now officially open. All locals and District Councils can expect to receive a personalized email from CUPE BC containing the registration links and individual tailored codes based on their delegate entitlements. Please contact our office by email (events@cupe.bc.ca) for immediate assistance if you have not received this information.
If your local is sending multiple delegates to this year’s convention, please ensure the registrations are completed using each member’s personal email address. For voting and security purposes, please note that generic role account email addresses (i.e. info@cupe.bc.ca) and work email addresses will not be accepted. This is also to ensure all attendees receive individualized access to the voting platform and resources related to convention proceedings.

This year, we are thrilled to present Know Us by the Stories We Tell: Imagining the Future as a Feminist Practice, a discussion featuring Kali Spitzer, photographer; El Jones, spoken word poet, educator, journalist, and community activist; and Jules Arita Koostachin, writer, performance artist, academic, and filmmaker, in conversation with CBC’s Vancouver’s Gloria Macarenko.

This is West Coast LEAF’s main fundraiser of the year and your support goes directly into our work to change the laws, policies and systems that harm the most marginalized people. Together, we can co-create a society that is just, equitable, and free from discrimination.
While we will miss tucking into poached eggs and copious coffee bright and early in the lush Hotel Vancouver ballroom, we are excited to move online and be able to welcome those who are geographically distant and might not be able to attend in a typical year. Live captioning and ASL interpretation will be available.
Another bonus to holding our event virtually is that we are also going online with our beloved silent auction! You will have several days to peruse and bid on the coveted items and services you most want prior to the event, so stay tuned for more details.

CUPE BC will be hosting a series of information webinars for CUPE members on the Plan Partners BC Municipal Pension Plan Redesign changes. If you are a member of the MPP, please see invitation and registration links below.
Each webinar will be one hour in length with presentations by CUPE National staff, and will provide members with an overview of key changes followed by a Q&A period. These webinars do not replace the current consultation process being conducted by the Plan Partners, but are to provide CUPE members with further opportunities to learn about the changes. These sessions are for general information and members seeking specific advice on their retirement planning should consult directly with a personal financial advisor.

International Women’s Day 2020 – event March 5th
Solidarity Statement with Wet’suwet’en
CUPE Metro Vancouver District Council is offering solidarity and support to the Wet’suwet’en Nation. Our members are committed to human rights and to the social justice principles contained in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and are engaged in finding ways to meaningfully respond to the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
We are troubled by the events of this past week that saw the enforcement of exclusion zones on traditional unceded territory, the forced removal of land defenders and threats to journalists. The outpouring of support across Canada for the position of the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs in the form of rallies, marches, sit-ins, and blockades is a hopeful sign that people everywhere are ready for not just reconciliation but reparations, and to build a new relationship with the Indigenous Peoples of these lands.
We now have an opportunity to take the first steps in transforming and decolonizing our laws. We call on the governments of BC and Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Coastal GasLink Pipeline to respect the position of the Hereditary Chiefs and seek a peaceful resolution to the current conflict.

This training is open to all. And CUPE National will cover the entire cost of book off plus per diem for any CUPE member that wants to participate.

A vibrant and engaged civil society is vital for a healthy democracy. Our civil society institutions can nurture natural leaders to strengthen their own organizations and work with other civil society actors for the common good. Whether you want to develop leadership skills to contribute to your own congregation, union or group, or want to support broad-based community organizing through the Metro Vancouver Alliance, this workshop is a great place to start! We will explore the tested community organizing model developed by the Industrial Areas Foundation and practiced by community alliances in Canada, the US, UK, Germany, Australia and New Zealand.
Participants will leave with an understanding of the basics of community organizing and tools to strengthen their own congregation, union, community group or educational institution, and be inspired to assume leadership in their organization and community.
